PRP Injection for Tennis Elbow

PRP Injection for Tennis Elbow

PRP therapy is a “non-surgical” technique performed in the clinic that begins with the collection of a little sample of your own blood. The platelets in your blood are then concentrated in a centrifuge.

The platelets, along with some plasma, are then injected back into your body in the location where the damage isn't healing properly.

Platelets are blood cells that are primarily responsible for blood clotting, as well as secreting growth factors (including human growth hormone) that aid tissue healing.

Your Platelet-Rich Plasma is injected into either your Wrist Extensor Tendon Origin at your Lateral Epicondyle (the Tennis Elbow "site") or your Flexor Origin on the medial side (the Golfer's Elbow "spot") in the case of Tennis Elbow or Golfer's Elbow.

Procedure:

Under local anaesthetic, the procedure is carried out. 15-30 mL of venous blood is taken and spun for 5-15 minutes in a centrifuge. This results in a fraction of plasma with a high concentration of platelets. The area around the tendon will be cleansed with antiseptic and numbed with a local anaesthetic injection. Under ultrasound guidance, approximately 2-3 ml of platelet-rich plasma is injected into the tendon. The tendon may be treated with multiple punctures needling at the same time. This could result in some discomfort during and after the surgery.
